American tenor James Flora recently performed with Opera Company Middlebury as the wealthy voluptuary Nicias, in Massenet's Thaïs. He was also seen as the lovably tragic Don José in Bizet’s classic, Carmen, with Opera Theater Pittsburgh. James recently finished his second year as a Resident Artist of Pittsburgh Opera where he performed Fenton in Falstaff to critical and wide acclaim. He was described by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review to be “delightful as Fenton, a fine romantic partner” and “well cast” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. This past season also saw James make his Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra debut under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda as Romeo in a Tchaikovsky duet from his orchestral work, Romeo and Juliet. He also participated in a Russian Opera Workshop performing as Count Vaudemont in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, an Italian Opera Concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic, and with Washington Concert Opera performing as Uldino in Attila.

Other recent performances include Don José in Carmen, Lensky in Eugene Onegin, Arturo inLucia di Lammermoor, and Pang in Turandot at Pittsburgh Opera; Gastone in La Traviata atGlimmerglass Opera; Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Tamino in The Magic Flute, and Malcolm inMacbeth at Arizona Opera; and Ferrando in Cosí fan tutte with Opera New Jersey.

Mr. Flora is also noted for his roles as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Alfredo in La Traviata, Nemorino in L’Elisir D’Amore, Romeo in Roméo et Juliette, Rodolfo in La Boheme, Sam inSusannah, Macduff in Macbeth, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Chevalier in Dialogues of the Carmélites, Nanki-Poo in The Mikado, the title role in Faust, the title role in Werther, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and the title role in Idomeneo.

As a recital soloist, Mr. Flora performed Schumann’s Dichterliebe as a Resident Artist with thePittsburgh Opera, a Gems Concert with Arizona Opera, A Night at the Opera with the Flagstaff Symphony, and various scenes concerts with Opera New Jersey.

In 2010, James was a Richard Tucker Music Foundation vocal competition finalist.  Mr. Flora has been named a Young American Artist at Glimmerglass Opera, a Studio Artist with the Arizona Opera Marion Roose Pullin Opera Studio, and a Young Artist with the Opera New Jersey Summer Festival Studio. He holds a Master’s of Music degree in Voice Performance from Florida State University and a Bachelor’s of Music degree in Voice Performance from The Ohio State University.
